The article examines and compares the various types of home reverse osmosis filters for installation under the kitchen sink, their differences and advantages:
• classic 5-stage 10-inch under-sink RO 50 kitchen systems;
• Morion DWM 101 S compact monoblock RO system;
• RO c500: high-performance direct flow reverse osmosis filter;
• Morion DWM 70S ultra-compact monoblock RO system;
• Aquaphor DWM 312 super-compact reverse osmosis filter.
In one of the previous articles, we examined various devices and systems for the purification of drinking water. We have come to the conclusion that even “drinking” tap water, which meets basic security standards, must be purified for safe and pleasant consumption.
In another article, it was shown that reverse osmosis filters have the most perfect degree of purification. They filter water slowly but retain not only common impurities but also impurities and toxins dissolved in water. Moreover, the membrane of the reverse osmosis filter traps most biological impurities, such as cholera bacteria, hepatitis viruses, and the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus. At the exit of the reverse osmosis filter, we get the purest water without foreign smells and tastes. This water is better for your health, it has exceptional taste, clarity, and softness.
Currently, a variety of reverse osmosis systems for home use are produced in the world. They differ not only in the trade name of the manufacturer but also in the characteristics and features of the device. There is no simple answer to the question “Which reverse osmosis filter is better?” since a lot depends on its operating conditions. Therefore, we will try to compare the different types of these filters and find out how to choose the most suitable for each case.
For comparison, we’ll take four different reverse osmosis systems: the classic 10-inch RO-50 Classic, the compact Morion DWM 101S monoblock system, the high-performance RO C500 direct-flow system, which does not require a storage tank, and the inexpensive Aquaphor DWM 312 reverse osmosis filter, which has the original layout:
RO 50 Classic, with pressure booster pump
Reverse osmosis system of traditional, time-tested configuration. Removes all types of water contaminants including hardness, bacteria, viruses, nitrates, nitrites, pharmaceutical traces, and any particles down to 0.0005 microns.
Equipped with a 10-liter storage tank and a separate tap (faucet) for clean water.
Has 5 degrees (phases) of cleaning:
1) preliminary mechanical cleaning from coarse impurities, sand, and dirt;
2) preliminary mechanical cleaning from small impurities;
3) fine cleaning with a carbon filter;
4) filtration through a membrane by reverse osmosis;
5) final filtration with a carbon filter or water conditioning with a mineralizing cartridge.
As pre-filters, standard removable modules of the classic 2.5 * 10 inches are used. A typical pre-filter package may include 20-micrometer and 5-micrometer polypropylene filters and a GAC or Carbon Block active carbon filter such as the Aquaphor 510-07. The frequency of replacing pre-filters depends on the degree of contamination of the source water, on average – about 6 months.
The standard membrane type Ionicore Keypra TFC or Vontron EC1812-50 provides a capacity of 50 gallons (about 180 liters) per day. It is recommended to replace the membrane every 18 months.
A conventional GAC post-filter, CFB post-filter or water conditioner (10 “x 2” size, JG connection) requires replacement every 6-12 months.
The benefits of RO 50 include:
• Effective pre-filtration.
• A sturdy filter housing base that is wall- or surface-mountable.
• Classic 10″ filter cartridges made by a variety of manufacturers around the world that are inexpensive and widely used.
• Low cost (about 290 euros), excellent quality, and European assembly.
• The system’s built-in pump speeds up the filtration process and enables use even when there is low water pressure. The pump allows the system to function at a relatively low line pressure of 1 atm. The pump has an electrical adapter and uses a 24 V safe voltage to operate.
• A UV lamp and a TDS controller can easily be added to the system if necessary. If you need it, simply increase the capacity of the filter by installing a larger membrane.
N.B.:
- Like all classic systems of this type, the RO filter requires a stable initial water pressure: 0.34-0.63 MPa (3.5-6.5 bar) for efficient operation. This is why we recommend this model with an integrated pump, substituting the older model Aquaphor Osmo-50 Classic Trio, which is discontinued.
- Filter replacement requires disassembly and flushing of the filter housings; the procedure to replace all filters can take on average an hour or two.

Aquaphor Morion DWM-101S
The innovative Aquaphor Morion system purifies water as thoroughly as classic reverse osmosis systems and has the same capacity (50 gallons / 190 liters per day). However, this system is less cumbersome. It is made in the form of a monoblock with a built-in storage tank for 5 liters. The system is equipped with a separate tap for clean water.
Drinking-Water Machine DWM-101S (RO-101s) has 4 degrees (phases) of cleaning:
1) preliminary mechanical cleaning from impurities, sand, and dirt;
2) fine cleaning with a carbon filter CFB;
3) filtration through a membrane by reverse osmosis;
4) post-filtration with a carbon filter or water conditioning with a mineralizing cartridge.
For filtration, original replaceable Aquaphor modules (cartridges) are used: usually, those are pre-filters K5 (polypropylene with a porosity of 5 micrometers) and K2 (a combined filter made of Aqualen fibers and natural activated carbon from coconut shells), then RO-50s (K-50s) membrane. A post-filter K7 or a post-filter-mineralizer K7M may be used as a finishing element, combining sorption purification with natural activated carbon with the enrichment of water with useful mineral salts of calcium and magnesium. Thanks to Click-and-Turn technology, Morion cartridge replacement takes seconds and requires no special skills. Replacement intervals are typical: 6 months for pre-filters, 18 months for membrane, and about 1 year for post-filter (water conditioner).
Advantages of Aquaphor Morion 101s:
Easy replacement of cartridges with a Click-and-Turn system. The cartridges are replaced along with their housings. So no flushing of housings is required. Thus, human contact with pollution is excluded, to a high degree.
Extremely compact: Morion takes up 50% less space than traditional 10-inch reverse osmosis systems. Dimensions: 42 x 19 x 37 cm (including water tank).
Morion can work under reduced pressure in pipes. Minimum working pressure: 1.86 bar. This is almost 2 times less than that of classic 5-stage systems.
The filter cartridges use proprietary Aqualen and CarboFiber Block technologies, which allow them to work stably for a long time in a more compact size.
Morion DWM (RO) variants:
Basically, the different versions of the Morion differ from each other in cartridge set and design:
• Morion RO-101S-EU has a K1-K2-RO50s-K7BM cartridge set (the K1 cartridge has two active filter zones and the last K7BM cartridge combines remineralization with antibacterial ultrafiltration).
• Morion DWM-102S: has a K2-K5-RO100s-K7M cartridge set (RO-100s membrane has twice the capacity compared to RO50s – up to 375 L/day or 15.6 L/hour (100 Gal/day). This model is also available in a stylish black-and-white design.
N.B.:
The price of the Morion system (225 – 320 euros) is slightly higher than that of classical high-quality reverse osmosis systems.
Only original Aquaphor replacement cartridges can be used in the system; they are a bit more pricey because they go with the original click-and-turn housings.

RO C500 direct flow reverse osmosis system
Thanks to the large membrane, this system produces up to 65 liters of purified water per hour (400 GPD). The high capacity of the system makes it possible to do without a storage tank and use this filter not only for a large household but also for a small bar or cafe.
The reverse osmosis system is a traditional, time-tested configuration. Removes all types of water contaminants including hardness, bacteria, viruses, nitrates, nitrites, traces of pharmaceuticals, and any particles down to 0.0005 microns.
It has four to five stages of purification:
1) preliminary mechanical cleaning of large impurities, sand, and dirt;
2) preliminary mechanical purification from fine impurities;
3) fine filtration with a carbon filter;
4) filtration through the membrane by reverse osmosis;
5) final filtration by carbon filter or water conditioning by mineralization cartridge (optional, to be purchased separately).
A typical pre-filter package may include 20-micrometer and 5-micrometer polypropylene filters and a GAC or Carbon Block active carbon filter such as the Aquaphor 510-07. An alternative is the bacteriostatic carbon block 0.5 micron Pentek SCBC-10.
The frequency of replacement of pre-filters depends on the level of contamination of the initial water, on average about 6 months. You can save money by purchasing a complete set of pre-filters, like the Ionicore set or Aquaphor set.
The high-performance Greenfilter TFC 3013 – 400 GPD membrane provides 400 gallons (approx. 1,500 liters) per day. We recommend changing the membrane every 18 months.
The optional carbon post-filter (GAC) or conditioner filter (10″ x 2″ size, JG connection) requires replacement every 6 months.
The benefits of RO C500:
– Effective pre-filtration.

– If required, the system may be easily supplemented with a UV lamp and TDS controller. If needed, simply increase the filter capacity by installing a larger membrane or a second parallel membrane.
Features of the RO C500:
– Filter replacement requires disassembling and flushing the filter housings; the procedure for replacing all filters can take an average of an hour or two.

Aquaphor DWM-312-12M-S1
The reverse osmosis system Drinking Water Machine DWM-312 (RO-31) is somewhat different from those discussed earlier. A jug made of durable food-grade plastic is used here as a container for drinking water. The volume of the jug is 2.3 liters, which is filled in 15-60 minutes. Thus, there is no need to install a separate tap (faucet), and the space occupied by the system is minimized. At the same time, RO 31 provides the same good degree of purification as other systems considered. The lack of a storage tank allows to a reduction of operating pressure and increases production to 100 gallons / 380 liters per day.
Like the previous model, DWM-312 (RO-31), has 4 degrees (phases) of cleaning:
1) preliminary mechanical cleaning from impurities, sand, and dirt;
2) fine cleaning with a carbon filter CFB;
3) filtration through a membrane by reverse osmosis;
4) post-filtration with a carbon filter or water conditioning with a mineralizing cartridge.
For filtration, original replaceable Aquaphor modules are used: usually, these are prefilters K5 and K2, RO-100s (K 100s) membrane, and post-filter or mineralizer. Extremely compact: dimensions: 27 x 10 x 37 cm, all cartridges are in line and can be hung on the wall of the cabinet under the sink.
The system can operate with a wide range of pipe pressures: 0.15-0.63 MPa (1.5-6.5 bar). Minimum main working pressure: 1.5 bar (22 psi). This is more than 2 times less than classic 5-stage systems, which means you hardly need an additional pump.
The filter cartridges use proprietary Aqualen and CarboFiber Block technologies, which allow them to work stably for a long time in a more compact size.
No need to install a separate tap in the sink. This can be useful if the property is temporary or rented.
The price of the system (130-150 euros) is lower than analogs, despite the use of the same original cartridges.
Peculiarities of DWM-312:
The original design (with a jug in place of a storage tank and a tap) requires careful handling. The instruction recommends, in order to avoid accidental leaks during unattended operation of the filter, to put the jug in a sink or on a surface to drain water.
The relatively low volume of ready-to-drink water is offset by the higher filtration rate. In addition, you can have a second (additional) jug for storing clean water.

Conclusion
As a result, the application, the amount of water consumed, the pressure in the pipeline, and the availability of installation space all affect the system that is chosen.
For instance, you might choose the conventional RO 50 Classic with a pump if your family is big. Its water storage tank will have enough water available. Additionally, the system will be incredibly cost-effective to operate thanks to widely available replacement filters (particularly if you have DIY skills).
The tiny Morion RO-101s system or even smaller RO-70s is better suited if there isn’t much free space in your kitchen. It offers an adequate supply of water despite its modest size. Additionally, the system typically functions well without a pump (and the need for AC) under low pipeline pressure.
The DWM-312 can be the ideal choice if you have a small family and temporary accommodation with kitchen furniture. It doesn’t require the installation of a separate tap and takes up the least amount of space under the sink. At the same time, changing filters is a simple task.
In contrast, if you require a lot of clean water all the time, the RO C500 direct flow reverse osmosis system is the preferable option. This device can generate up to 65 liters of purified water per hour (400 GPD) because of the big membrane. Due to the system’s great capacity, you can use this filter without the need for a storage tank. So, for a big house or a commercial enterprise (doctor’s office, bar, beauty salon, etc…) it would be convenient to install a direct-flow system of high capacity, like RO C500.
All reviewed systems operate on the same principle of reverse osmosis, which provides the same high-quality of purified water as premium bottled water.
Reverse osmosis removes virtually all impurities from water, including hardness, chlorine, lead, other metals, bacteria, and many others. The water becomes clear and soft, allowing you to discover the true taste of coffee and tea. This water is odorless and completely safe even for children and people with allergies. In addition to obtaining ideally pure water, all considered systems also allow you to equalize the pH of the water and enrich it with useful natural microelements using a conditioning module (post-filter).
Of course, a drinking water filter will not turn your tap water into branded mineral or medicinal table water. However, it will successfully replace regular bottled water.
